VILLAGE GARDEN, CAMBRIDGESHIRE
The brief from the client was to “not really do too much”!
A recent remodelling and extension of the house had left a garden in need of reconnection to the house and space as a whole. Pre-loved structures and some particular plants were to be salvaged, reinstated or relocated. A beautiful wisteria-clad pergola being a particular ’must keep’. A light touch was in order whilst making the garden feel completely refreshed and reinvigorated.

The garden is set amongst and includes some majestic mature trees, and has, like a lot of gardens, a sunny side and a shady side. Planting needed to bring both scale and tie the space together visually, whilst suiting the aspect and clients tastes. Planting at the side and back of the garden was essentially remaining where it was, but with judicious pruning and removal of some of the more mature shrubs, the makeover could begin. Reshaping of old beds and the addition of generous new beds brought planting to centre stage.
"Vanessa and Rachel did an excellent job with our garden. It now looks subtly beautiful with lots of new curves and shapes. The flora is complementary across the new beds with stunning colours throughout the seasons. We are delighted."
By introducing materials sympathetic to the lovely buttery coloured brick and rural location, it really feels timeless, classic and stylish.
Colours and textures connected all the planting areas together, old and new. With specimen shrubs and small trees being located in new beds that wrap around the large new dining and longing patio areas, the view from the airy new extension is only enhanced.

With our clients’ permission, these photos taken before works began, show the old vistas to established shrub borders, an extensive lawn and tired wooden pergolas. A re-design of the space and the planting has refreshed the garden matching our clients’ beautiful new extension.
