VILLAGE GARDEN, CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Our design for this garden has provided focal points, seating patios and reasons to venture into what was previously a simple, open lawned space.
Using the two old apple trees as our inspiration for the planting style, we introduced plant-filled borders to walk past as well as through, providing year-round colour, texture and scent.

Our clients have a beautiful home nestled in the Hertfordshire countryside. The restored barn is part of a new development and looks out onto the woodland beyond. Their large, open garden was laid to lawn with post and rail fencing bordering the neighbouring properties.
We worked on creating some layering in the garden to frame the views, keeping our clients' sight lines within their own garden. Organically shaped, sweeping, plant-filled borders now wraparound the extended wooden dining deck and break up the expanse of lawn, creating journeys through the space.
Using the same material, we also created a new seating deck to catch the afternoon sun, which is nestled within planting and tall grasses for privacy and seasonal interest, as well as a growing area complete with raised beds, a greenhouse and a cold frame, adjacent to a new fledgling orchard.

"Vanessa and Rachel did an excellent job with our garden. It now looks subtly beautiful with lots of new curves and shapes. The flora is complementary across the new beds with stunning colours throughout the seasons. We are delighted."
A brick paver path leads the eye through three focal metal arches, planted with climbing roses and evergreen jasmine, which will (in time) create a beautiful scented walkway.
And planting, as always, softens all of the lines and provides a wonderful textural feel to the space, bringing seasonal interest and year round structure. In this garden particularly we have used native hedging to frame the back of the new seating area which is repeated along the post and rail fencing. Statement specimen shrubs such as the Cercis canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’, and a new water feature provide some wonderful focal points, providing movement, sound and colour.

With our clients' permission, these images show what a difference incorporating generous planting areas can make. Along with sympathetically extending the dining deck, and creating a brand new corner seating deck on which to sit and enjoy the garden, the space has really become a garden!
